Top 10 Tips for Saving Money on Printing
- House Stock: Use a “house stock” of paper
to print your project on, not a fancy, new line. Not only is this less expensive,
but it will probably already be in stock, so you don’ t have to wait
additional days while your specialty stock is being ordered.
- Avoid custom die cuts.
- No bleeds – this is when the ink runs off the
paper’s edges. Instead, opt for a small margin of white space around
the edge. This uses less paper, thus less money on your project.
- Stick to one or two inks for a project if possible.
The more inks, the higher the cost.
- Avoid metallic inks.
- Use standard sizes, not custom ones – for example,
choose an 8.5x11trifold, instead of an oversized brochure.
- Quantity: Purchase the greatest quantity you can afford
and that you will use. As the quantity increases, your cost per piece decreases.
- Standard Inks. If possible, opt for standard inks instead
of custom mixed Pantone inks.
- Plan Ahead. Rush jobs can cost more in printing and
overnight delivery fees.
- Proof Your Work. Make your changes before you send the
job to the printer. Last minute changes can result in additional fees for
extra proofs. It will also delay the job.
